Rising in the tri- state--- so, too..

Are the number of students heading back to school-- and as of this morning's first bell-- evansville catholic diocese in- person classes-- are back in session.

44news reporter marisa patwa shares a glimpse of what the first day back looked like.... the evansville catholic diocese -- willing to face criticism for not pushing back their start date for the school year amid the pandemic "you know our thoughts and prayers our with those school administration's every day and i know it's not an easy decision on anything that you do and i know our school administration spend countless sumer days on beautiful summer days spent in door planning for this very moment."

"it's very important to us that we live our the mission of catholic schools and we do that best in person but we also want to do that safely."

And students at mater dei high school took the new safety precautions -- which include plexiglas, shut down water fountains and maintaining that social distance -- in stride.

"i was able to greet students and every one of them had their mask on and was ready to go."

Now unlike other school districts in the area the evansville catholic dioceses is not offering a virtual program for parents feeling uncomfortable about sending their children back to the classroom just yet.

"i think that we're all glad to be back in school and that it's harder to be online because you don't truly to get to interact with everyone so it's a lot better to be in person."

And while there is always a fear of the virus -- for some student's -- it's simmered.

"because we are taking so many precautions in being careful i am not super afraid because i think that if someone does get it will do the right things in order to keep us all safe."

If a student does contract covid - 19 they will be instructed to quarantine at home while teachers work with them on their studies.
