Family taking selfies plunge into 40ft deep well in Indonesia

A family had to be rescued after standing on a drain cover to take selfies and plunging into a 40ft deep well.

Puji Sugiarto, 43, and his son, Al, aged five and daughter, Dee, aged seven, had been eating at a restaurant in Jakarta, Indonesia, when they posed outside on June 21.

Reports said that the family climbed onto the well cover to take pictures but they did not know that it was only made of thin material.

They then plunged into the abyss in the Matraman District, East Jakarta.

Locals heard their cries for help and called the emergency services.

Miraculously, the family were winched out almost unscathed after the pipes and the water at the bottom of the well cushioned their fall.

Edi Purwono, a firefighter from East Jakarta, said: "They climbed into the well cover, then fell into the well that is 12 metres deep." The rescuers tied a rope to the victims' bodies and they were pulled out of the deep hole.

The rescue operation lasted for an hour.

The family was not hurt seriously but they were reportedly shocked.

Fire chief Edi Purwono added: ''The father landed at the bottom first and his children landed next.

They were lucky to survive such a big fall.''
