Rescue operations begin after passenger plane crashes into Karachi neighbourhood

Rescue operations are underway after a passenger jet carrying at least 100 people crashed into a neighbourhood in Karachi on May 22.

Footage shows firefighters attempt to extinguish the blaze nearby the crash site in Kazimabad, which is near the Karachi airport's runway.

The mayor of Karachi, at the scene of a Pakistan International Airlines plane crash, says none of the 107 passengers and crew survived.

He added: “We have the view there will be no survivors." Pakistan PM Imran Khan tweeted: "Shocked & saddened by the PIA crash.

Am in touch with PIA CEO Arshad Malik, who has left for Karachi and with the rescue and relief teams on ground as this is the priority right now.

Immediate inquiry will be instituted.

Prayers & condolences go to families of the deceased."
