A German man plowed his car into a carnival parade in the western town of Volkmarsen on Monday, injuring 60 people including children, police said.

*RESENDING UPDATING NUMBER OF INJURED IN INTRO* A carnival in a small German town ended in tragedy on Monday (February 24).

A car ploughed into a parade injuring dozens of people.

An official said around a third were children.

A 29-year-old man, who's a German citizen, has been arrested - on suspicion of attempted homicide.

Debris from the carnival was seen flung across the road at the scene.

A silver Mercedes thought to be the car that was used was surrounded by police tape.

It was later searched by a team of forensic workers.

A police spokesman said there was no indication of motive yet, but it appeared to be intentional: (SOUNDBITE) (German) POLICE SPOKESMAN HENNING HINN SAYING: "We can only make a statement according to witnesses who saw the incident's course of events take place.

It can be assumed that it was intentional." (SOUNDBITE) (German) POLICE SPOKESMAN HENNING HINN SAYING: "Around 2:30 pm, a young man in a car drove into a group of people at Volkmarsen's carnival parade.

Several dozen people are injured, currently the number is around 30.

From that around 8 to 10 are seriously injured.

Among those who are seriously injured are children, unfortunately." A witness told local media the car continued driving through the crowd for around 30 meters.

The incident comes less than a week after one of the worst racist attacks in Germany since World War Two.

Nine people were killed in two shisha bars, before the suspect killed his mother and himself.

The presumed killer had posted a racist manifesto online, espousing conspiracy theories and deeply racist views.
