Hey good evening everyone...if you haven't heard the name marcus winters, you really should make yourself familiar...the toledo, ohio native has made himself at home in angola at trine university, and he's making sure people around that school won't forget his name... 3 marcus winters knows defense... marcus winters: "i love defense.

Defense just comes natural to me."just ask his coach...troy abbs: "i mean, in his first game ever, he had two interceptions, and really set the tone for the rest of his career."the rest of that career included 33 wins, two conference titles, two all- american nods, two miaa defensive player of the year awards and 12 single season and career trine football records.abbs: "we knew as long as he could keep his priorities in line, he was gonna be a really, really successful student-athlete, and he's been able to do that so far."the football chapter in marcus' book came to a close following the 2019 season..

But the basketball chapter was just starting to be written.brooks miller: "we talked with marcus early on to help get him here to play football, we always thought basketball could be a possibility."winters: "i didn't honestly think i was gonna play basketball."but he did.

And just like in football he made his mark.

He helped trine capture the program's first miaa title a year ago, and surprise, surprise, was named the conference's defensive player of the year as a junior last year.winters: "i always want to get one of those.

I was actually surprised when i got it last year, cause i didn't think i was going to get it.

But i always want to get defensive, because i am a defensive player.

I love that."miller: "marcus has done all these great things in football as a football player.

Interceptions, tackles, big plays, deflections.

In basketball, he's made shots, he's made great assists, he's come up with steals, blocks, rebounds, but what marcus really is, he's just a winner.

So, we're really fortunate, and i feel really fortunate to be his coach, and have him be a part of the influence he's had on our teams and our culture."as a senior this season, his focus remains defense..

Averaging five rebounds and two steals a game.

But after graduating three of their top five scorers from last year he's seen his role change to more of a scorer... and he's averaging a career high 12 points per gamewinters: "my first year, when i started playing basketball, i wasn't really a scorer, i just played defense, that's what i learned to do, just play defense.

And, as we get to this year, i feel like i needed to score more and play defense at the same time."miller: "he really finds a way, and figures out 'okay, what do we gotta do to win?

What's it gonna take for us to win?'

And he can provide that for you.

That's what's so special about him."winters' special career with trine will likely end in the coming weeks..

But he'll leave the school next winter with two degrees..

Winters: "as soon as i stepped on campus, it was everything.

Love, professors are good, it's just, you could feel the vibe."and while you can tell the mark the school left on him indelible..

It's the legacy he leaves behind that won't be forgotten.

Miller: "all the stuff that you see up there on his legends poster is really, it should just say one word.

It should say winner.

He's gonna go down, i think, as the most decorated athlete we've ever had here at trine university."

The thunder are 13-11 this season..they'll wrap their regular season saturday before beginning conference tourney
