The columbus police department overview committee gets an update on the force and some future objectives.

Chief fred shelton discussed a number of topics with the committee today, including the problem of officers leaving the department before the end of their contracts.

He also shared information on positions available within the department, saying there are currently 35 entry level positions open.

He emphasized the need to reinforce to the public that information on crime in columbus from social media is not always factual.

We first told you a couple of months ago the center wanted to expand its services to treat people seeking help from addiction.

God's house of hope is ready to open it's doors.

Back in september, this group bought the old montgomery county elementary school to turn it into a treatment center.

Amy coyle says it's been a long road to get here.

" it's nothing but god and he gets all the glory but just to be honest we're tired and we're worn out."

Co-founder jennifer sprayberry says the goal was to create a home for 50 men and women.

" we just had to keep our eyes upon the task that was in front of us because it was so overwhelming .so we did one project to get to the next project."

But they needed an extra set of helping hands, so the board asked community members to volunteer with decorations.

And some rooms are dedicated to families who lost someone from addiction.

" from that day forward a room was taken, another room was taken and before you know it every room in the whole facility was taken whether it's in memory of, in honor of, or if it's just a church doing a room.

They re-did all the paint, put new ceiling fans up.

Some put carpet in, some didn't.

Every room has it's own story."

" overall, god's house of hope wants to impact peoples lives on their road to recovery.

" i've seen so many lives change in the nettleton location, it's a miracle what god can do, it can't be done without a god.

Pray for the people that's coming in and what they're going through because everyone is addicted to something but everyone's addictions are different.

We just need to keep in mind these people and what they're struggling with and their faith in god.

An organization that helps feed mississippi state students receives a big boost today.

Bully's closet and pantry received a ten thousand dollar grant from kroger foods.

Student affairs and the student association help with the initiative.

The goal is to meet students' basic needs while going to college.

A number of students cannot even afford toiletries and in some cases food.

Research suggests about 30% of all college students fall in that category.

This grant and other community partners make it possible to serve students.

"kroger is 100% behind "zero hunger/zero waste", and being here in the starkville community we most definitely wanted to uplift this community and bring that to the table."

"this gift that we are getting from kroger really allows us to think about the future.

Think about how we can impact students in the long-run, and how we can make sure that this is here and that we are supporting our individuals."

Bobby, how excited are they for their big competition?

These kids are ready.

And they aren't worried about the high school competition.

They're confident in their work, and most importantly, confident in each other.

"definitely some late nights.

I know me and my teammate over here have been up here until 9 o'clock one night."

It's been a grind to get this point.

Where only..... "the best of the best get there."

The robotics team at the new hope elementary school..

Have stamped their invitation to an intense state competition friday in hattiesburg.

And to make matters more intense for these elementary students..

Sot - lucas sloan "we don't have many middle school robotics teams here.

They're all down at the coast.

So whenever we compete we usually compete against high schoolers."

And regardless of the outcome, this team has come a long way.

Each team member building life lessons they can take outside of the playing field.

Brady hogan - the teams main programmer and public relation manager says this experience is something he'll never forget.

"i've had a great experience throughout all this.

It has showed me a lot of things on how to build team ship.

And how to you know , get through the hard and tough things in robotics.

And also preparing me for the future."

As for chloe evans and hunter yarbrough, joining a robotics team has helped them learn how to be team players.

You get you make a bunch of new friends.

And it's really fun to get and see like what the robots do.

And we learn a lot about sportsmanship."

This year's theme is "disco revival."

Nearly one hundred ja members spent the day transforming the bancorpsouth arena, into a boogie wonderland.

Friday night's event features food - drink - and dancing..

All proceeds fund projects throughout the year that help local children and families.
