Suu Kyi faces down Hague's genocide probe

Aung San Suu Kyi arrived at the International Court of Justice in The Hague on Tuesday to defend Myanmar against accusations of genocide against Rohingya Muslims. Opposing her is Gambia's Justice Minister Abubacarr Tambadou, who spent ten years prosecuting perpetrators of another devastating loss of human life: The Rwandan genocide.

Gambia launched the proceedings against Buddhist-majority Myanmar in November, accusing it of violating its obligations under the 1948 Genocide Convention.

During three days of court proceedings Myanmar's leader, a Nobel Peace laureate, is expected to repeat denials of genocide and argue that military operations in question were a legitimate counterterrorism response to attacks by Rohingya militants.

In his opening remarks, Tambadou said "every day of inaction means that more people are being killed."
