Michigan man uses battle ax to strike down home intruder

KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN — A man in Michigan managed to hold his own during a home invasion thanks to some eccentric hobbies.

According to Wood TV, 36-year-old Ben Ball was playing video games in his Kalamazoo apartment late Wednesday night when someone who once dated his ex-roommate came knockin' and eventually kicked the door in.

Now, a more conventional American household would have a gun or baseball bat around to use as a weapon, but not Ben.

Ben does ritualized combat for fun, and has an arsenal of replica weapons from the Middle Ages.

So when that intruder burst in, your man Ben thought fast and grabbed a battle ax replica that he calls "my baby." He wielded it against the intruder, 33-year-old Alex Rawls, striking him once in the torso.

The pair then grappled with each other all around the apartment and pretty much destroyed the place before Rawls finally made a run for it.

Police who arrived at the scene deployed a K9 unit to follow the trail of blood that Rawls oh-so-conveniently left.

Kalamazoo County officials say Rawls' wounds were substantial enough that he had to spend a night at the hospital before being thrown to jail, and is now facing home invasion charges.

Officials say avoiding robbers or intruders is usually the best course of action for most folks.

Not everyone does combat every weekend and has an arsenal of weapons stashed at home, but hey, if you got the goods, use 'em.
