SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) FACEBOOK CEO MARK ZUCKERBERG, SAYING: "This is going to be the first time ever that there is a dedicated space in the app that's focused on high quality journalism." Facebook on Friday said it is ready to be a friend to the news industry.

The world's leading social network unveiled a new feed for its mobile app, called… Facebook News…news solely from professional media outlets, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and BuzzFeed.

SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) FACEBOOK CEO MARK ZUCKERBERG, SAYING: "In order to help curate the top things that are in there we are not only doing algorithmically, we've also put together a team of folks with experience in journalism and a background in this.

I don't think it is something that can just be done by computers." Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg made the announcement at a sit-down with media executive Robert Thomson, Chief Executive of News Corp - parent company of the Wall Street Journal.

Thomson, along with many other media executives, has long criticized Facebook for not fairly compensating news outlets for their content -something ZuckerberG seemed intent on rectifying with the new feature.

SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) FACEBOOK CEO MARK ZUCKERBERG, SAYING: "You can run your own ads and get 100 percent of the revenue or you can use our ad network, which we have obviously a lot of engineers and people working on trying to build really advanced technologies for this and there we give the vast majority of revenue to the publishers in order to make that work." Zuckerberg also said the company will be investing money in local news outlets, providing them exposure via the Facebook News tab.

But the new service already has its detractors.

Conservative outlet Breitbart News will also be a part of the feed - keeping alive a debate about what Facebook's role should be in sharing stories that could be deemed as misinformation.
