Youth REACH Md survey

In other news...the youth reach coalition in maryland... is currently running a survey... and census... of homeless youth in the state.

Now live... in the studio with more details.

Nick?

Nick: that's right michella, reach stands for "reach out, engage, assist and count to end homelessness."

From the waters of the eastern shore to the mountains of washington county, officials are hoping to better understand and address youth homelessness in maryland.

This is the second count since the project began in 20-15.

In the last one, they identified 834 people that did not have a fixed, stable or permanent place to call home.

The coalition is surveying young people between the ages of 14 and 24.

They say this age group is at increased risk for victimization, exploitation, poor physical and behavioral health...and substance use.

Organizers in washington county say many of them who are in school typically couch-surf from place to place, and are in danger of dropping out.

The survey is confidential, and can be taken online...or at a guidance counselor's office, the reach cold weather shelter, turning point...or the washington county free library.

Dana pentoney: "across the state, it's very difficult to count unaccompanied youth because they stay hidden.

They don't like to be known, because they're worried there could be consequences for not having permanent, stable housing."

Nick: the local survey for washington county will conclude this friday.

Reporting live in the studio, nick munson, whag news.

Michella: thanks nick.
