Pompeo: Afghan Peace Talks Scuppered

US President Donald Trump said unexpectedly on Saturday that talks on bringing peace to Afghanistan are on hold.

The US will keep pressuring Taliban militants while supporting Afghan troops until it sees significant Taliban commitments.

Reuters reports secret talks with the Taliban’s “major leaders” at the Camp David, Maryland, presidential compound were cancelled.

The move came after the group claimed responsibility for a recent attack in Kabul that killed a U.S. soldier and 11 other people.

The United States has recalled U.S. special envoy for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad to Washington to chart the path forward.

Asked on “Fox News Sunday” whether Afghan talks were dead, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said, “For the time being they are.”
