Protesters Converge Outside Indian High Commission in London Over Kashmir Conflict

Thousands of people gathered outside the Indian High Commission in London on Thursday, August 15, to protest the Indian government’s move to revoke special status for its section of Kashmir.

Footage tweeted by the UK branch of the governing Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) political party, led by Prime Minister Imran Khan, showed many demonstrators waving Pakistan and Kashmir flags.

Reuters reported that London police kept a small counter-demonstration apart from the main protest.

Kashmir is a disputed Muslim-majority region in the Himalayas, parts of which are divided between India and Pakistan.

According to the BBC, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he planned to restore Kashmir to its “past glory” in an Independence Day speech earlier on Thursday.

However, India’s decision to revoke special status has caused outrage in Pakistan.

The PTI UK Twitter account that shared this footage said the Modi government had a “tyrannical” and “Nazi ideology,” and claimed Modi planned to install a “Hindutva supremacy” that would threaten minorities in the restive region.
