Trump Mideast peace plan proving unpopular in Jordan

U.S. President Donald Trump's long-promised "Deal of the Century" to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is still secret, though leaked details suggest it dumps the idea of a full Palestinian state in favor of limited self-rule in part of the Occupied Territories, which would undermine Palestinians' right to return.

Trump Mideast peace plan proving unpopular in Jordan

U.S. President Trump's long-promised "Deal of the Century" to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict doesn't go down well here.

In the squalid, unpaved streets of Al Baqaa refugee camp, home to 120 thousand of Jordan's registered Palestinian refugees - People like Mohammed Diab - who left the city of Haifa in 1948 - rejects the idea of ever giving up his right to return to his homeland.

Leaked details suggest the peace plan dumps the idea of a full Palestinian state in favour of limited self-rule in part of the Occupied Territories.

That would undermine Palestinians' right to return.

A red line for many.

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) PALESTINIAN REFUGEE, MOHAMMED DIAB, SAYING: "There is no way we will give up on our homeland, this is impossible.

The future generations will not give it up, if we die, there are others, am I right?

There are future generations, and ones after them, they want their rights.

This is our homeland, it is impossible to give it up." The deal to resolve the conflict is still a secret, but details are dripping out.

And they're proving unpopular in Jordan.

A country where estimates suggest people with Palestinian descent account for more than half of the population.

The kingdom took in more than any other after Israel's creation in 1948.

Jordan's King Abdullah publicly met with fury any suggestion that he might accept a deal from his U.S. ally by making his country a homeland for Palestinians.

It's not clear when Trump's peace plan - led by Jared Kushner - will be unveiled.

What we do know is that the Palestinians already say it falls short of their goal of statehood.
