Xbox and Keanu Reeves unveil new console and games

Microsoft has unveiled its next-generation Xbox console, known as "Project Scarlett," which is set to hit store shelves during the 2020 holiday season.

Keanu Reeves made a surprise appearance to unveil the release date for "Cyberpunk 2077", as Gracie Jerome reports.

This week sees thousands of gaming fans from all over the world descend on Los Angeles for the E3 Expo.

It's the world's biggest gaming conference, and Microsoft kicked things off on Sunday (June 9), announcing its next generation Xbox console will go on sale by the end of 2020.

It has been codenamed "Project Scarlett", and its creators say it will be four times more powerful than the Xbox One X console.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) XBOX EXECUTIVE VICE-PRESIDENT OF GAMING, PHIL SPENCER, SAYING: "When we talk about freedom to play, when we talk about Xbox and the cloud, when we talk about streaming your games, Project Scarlett with all of its power and all of its performance is the foundation in our future in console and the formation of our future in cloud." Microsoft didn't unveil the console itself, but promised it will show up to 120 frames per second - extremely high resolution picture twice that of the average TV.

And maximum definition for viewing characters including Keanu Reeves, whose role in "Cyberpunk 2077" was unveiled - going from virtual to reality when the Matrix star made a surprise appearance.

Microsoft isn't the only one in the race to deliver a game streaming service, with Google launching its own "Stadia" service in November, and Sony and Amazon working on their own, too.

But the move has some gamers worried about slow home internet speeds... (SOUNDBITE) (English) DIRECTOR OF XBOX PLATFORM MARKETING, CINDY WALKER, SAYING: "I know the teams are definitely looking to use the preview that's launching in October to learn and understand where the dead spots are..." As well as streaming, gaming rival Sony is working on its own next-generation PlayStation 5 console - although there's no release date yet.

Fans will have to keep waiting for more clues after Sony dropped out of this year's E3 expo - which opens to the public on Tuesday (June 11).
