ROUGH CUT (no reporter narration) STORY: The U.S. Border Patrol says its agents in El Paso, Texas apprehended more than a thousand migrants on Wednesday, shortly after they'd crossed into the United States from Mexico.

Agents reportedly took 1,036 people into custody.

The incident occurred the day before U.S. President Trump said he would ratchet up tariffs unless Mexico stopped people from illegally crossing the border it shares with the United States.

The plan would impose a 5% tariff on Mexican imports starting on June 10 and increase monthly, up to 25% on Oct.

U.S. officials say they are dealing with record numbers of migrants crossing the border illegally, mostly Central American families fleeing poverty, violence and corruption in their home countries.
