Because of the ownership change, what will happen with the X-Men franchise and its characters is unclear, but director and writer Simon Kinberg said that he always saw the movie as the 'culmination' of the saga.

Tye Sheridan, who plays founding member Cyclops said it would be exciting to continue playing the characters but the what would happen going forwards was uncertain.

When asked if he'd return to his role as powerful mutant Magneto in future, actor Michael Fassbender said he's "not opposed to it".

The films' producer Hutch Parker said he hoped Marvel would now develop future X-Men movies.

The story of "Dark Phoenix", which is seen as a classic in X-Men lore, has already been told in "X-Men: The Last Stand".

Despite some poor reactions to that film the producers are giving the story a second chance.

It follows Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) as she struggles to deal with a primal force called The Phoenix which dwells within her.

As the force further possesses Grey, she becomes the impossibly powerful Dark Phoenix, which her fellow X-Men, who include Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Charles Xavier (James McAvoy), Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Quicksilver (Evan Peters), Alexandra Schipp (Storm) and Tye Sheridan (Cyclops) have to contend with.
