Trump vows to bring 'Rolling Thunder' back to Washington

As Rolling Thunder, a veterans advocacy group, took their final motorcycle ride through the U.S. capital on Memorial Day weekend, President Donald Trump pledged to salvage the three decades-old tradition.

Trump vows to bring 'Rolling Thunder' back to Washington

They roared through the U.S. capital one last time as they've done every Memorial Day weekend for three decades... But while organizers claim 2019 will mark the final ride for the veterans advocacy group -- known as Rolling Thunder -- President Donald Trump on Sunday vowed to keep it going, tweeting: "The Great Patriots of Rolling Thunder WILL be coming back to Washington, D.C.

Next year, & hopefully for many years to come." But last year, the group said it could not continue as usual - citing a lack of cooperation by law enforcement and the rising costs of permits... ...a decision lamented by Sunday's spectators.

Rolling Thunder President Joe Bean told CNN on Sunday that there were no plans to roll back the decision...but added: "Until we can get into the White House and talk to President Trump and see what he can do for us -- this is our final ride in Washington." The group was formed in 1987 by Vietnam veteran Artie Muller...its name derived from a 1965 bombing campaign against North Vietnam dubbed "Operation Rolling Thunder." And Muller insists the event is not going away entirely - just moving beyond Washington.

Muller: "We're just spreading out and we hope to get stronger.

That's what our idea is on this, so coast to coast - North, South, Midwest." So for now, it appears to be Rolling Thunder's final spin around town....from the Pentagon, around the National Mall...to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
