Chinese airlines demand Boeing jet compensation

China's three biggest airlines want compensation from Boeing over the grounding of its MAX 8 jets.

Air China and China Southern confirming the move to Reuters Wednesday.

China Eastern announced its claim a day earlier.

The Boeing jets have been grounded since March following two fatal crashes.

That's left as many as 96 of the planes stuck on the ground in China.

Aviation experts say that costs the airlines almost 15 thousand dollars per day, per aircraft.

The potential costs could also go much wider.

Air traffic grew at a slower rate in China in March and April, which some attribute to the MAX grounding.

That could leave airports unhappy too.

Then there's a flock of carriers outside China also seeking compensation.

Ryanair, United Airlines and Turkish Airlines among those to say they want some money back.

But it's the Chinese demands that could prove most sensitive.

Washington and Beijing are engaged in an escalating trade war.

The compensation claims could become yet another factor in the dispute.

Meanwhile Boeing is hurrying to develop a fix for its troubled jets.

The planemaker says it's finished work on an update to the software implicated in the crashes.

But it's still unclear when the MAX 8 can return to service.

U.S. aviation regulators haven't said when they might sign off on Boeing's fixes.

Regulators in other countries - not least Europe and China - may take even longer to conduct their own assessments.
