Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday (May 7) the decision to re-run the Istanbul election was an important step towards strengthening democracy, describing the March vote as being marred by "organised corruption" and illegality.

The High Election Board ruled on Monday (May 6) for a fresh Istanbul mayoral contest to be held on June 23, scrapping the March 31 vote which was lost by Erdogan's candidate, in a move drew opposition accusations of "dictatorship." Speaking to members of his ruling AK Party in parliament, Erdogan also slammed business people criticizing the decision to repeat the election on June 23, saying they should know their place.

The Turkish lira tumbled against the dollar after the election decision, bringing its losses this year to 14 percent as investors fretted about political uncertainty and business leaders criticised the move.

Turkey's Western allies have also expressed concern about the election's annulment.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said the decision was neither transparent nor comprehensible.
