North Korea fires short-range 'projectiles'

North Korea fired several short-range, unidentified projectiles from its east coast on Saturday, South Korea's military said, as analysts said the country is stepping up pressure against the United States after February's failed nuclear summit in Hanoi.

North Korea fires short-range 'projectiles'

North Korea fired several unidentified projectiles from its east coast on Saturday.

That's according to South Korea's military, who had initially described it as a missile launch - but later gave a more vague description.

If they were missiles, it would be the first launch in over a year - and comes amid a breakdown in talks with Washington, and a failed nuclear summit with President Trump in February.

South Korea says it's holding a joint analysis with the United States.

Kim Jong Un had warned that a state of hostility could easily return - according to North Korean media last month.

At a summit with Russian President Putin in April, Kim had said peace on the Korean peninsula depended on the United States, in what appeared to be a pressure tactic on getting Washington to be more flexible on easing international sanctions.

The last known launch by North Korea was at the end of 2017.

Since then it declared the building of its nuclear force complete and extended an olive branch to the South and the U.S. Kim Jong Un had vowed not to test nuclear weapons or intercontinental ballistic missiles.

But the North has conducted other weapons tests since then.

Including a test of what it called a tactical guided weapons system in April.

The White House said it's aware of North Korea's actions, and that it'll continue to monitor the situation.
