It was one of the biggest days I've ever paddled out.

It was early new year, and it was just magic.

Beautiful conditions, I went out there not knowing what to expect, and all of a sudden it happened." 7.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) ANDREA MOLLER SAYING WHILE HOLDING THE AWARD ALOFT: "Thank you so much!" STORY: Grant Baker of South Africa took surfing's Ride of the Year trophy at the the World Surf League's Big Wave Awards held at Redondo Beach near Los Angeles on Thursday (May 2).

Baker received the trophy for his performance in Maui last November - he also collected the Biggest Paddle award for this.

The awards were not just about winners but also highlighted the bravery of the surfers taking on the big waves.

This was marked by Makua Rothman of the United States being awarded the Wipeout of the Year for his spectacular crash in Fiji last May.

Frenchwoman Justine Dupont took the best Overall Performance of the Year while Andrea Moller of Brazil was presented with an award for a newly-created world record in women's paddle-in surfing.

Moller set the record riding a 42-foot (12.8-metre) back in January 2016 in Maui, Hawaii.
