Famed filmmaker John Singleton has died He was 51 Singleton suffered a massive stroke on April 17 and had been in intensive care ever since His family announced the decision to take him off life support on April 29 Singleton family, via statement Singleton's first film was "Boyz n the Hood," which he helmed at just 24 The film made him the youngest filmmaker and first African American to be nominated for best director and best original screenplay at the 1992 Oscars His other films included "Poetic Justice"... "2 Fast 2 Furious" and "Shaft" Singleton was also outspoken in his criticism of racism in Hollywood, and always used his work to open doors John Singleton, via "The Hollywood Masters" He is survived by his mother, father and seven children
