ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION Catholic worshippers led by the archbishop of Paris Monsignor Michel Aupetit and the archpriest of Notre-Dame Cathedral Patrick Chauvet, walked the procession of the Way of the Cross near Notre-Dame marking Good Friday (April 19) just days after a blaze devastated the famous monument.

Aupetit, who usually leads the ceremony at the Sacre-Coeur Basilica in Montmartre, attended the one in tribute to Notre-Dame.

"France is crying and with it all its friends from around the world.

It has been hit in the heart because its stones are the testimony of an invincible hope, which by its talent and courage, the genius and faith of its builders, raised this luminous lantern of stone, wood and glass," he said.

The Way of the Cross procession commemorates Christ's suffering and death, one of the main services ahead of Easter - the climax of the Christian year.
