Kim gives Trump to the end of the year to become more flexible

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un says a breakdown in talks with the United States has raised the risk of reviving tensions between the two countries.

That's according to North Korean state media on Saturday (April 13).

Kim also saying he's interested in further talks with U.S. President Donald Trump, if the U.S comes to the table with the right attitude.

But that's only until the end of this year.

Kim reportedly made the speech on Friday (April 12) to North Korea's Supreme People's assembly.

The remarks coming just a day after Trump said he was open to meeting Kim for a third time.

Trump also saying during the meeting in Washington with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, the U.S would persist with a series of biting sanctions aimed at North Korea.

(Soundbite) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP, SAYING: "I think that sanctions are right now at a level that's a fair level and I really believe something very significant is going to happen.

We could always increase them, but I didn't want to do that at this time." Trump's sanctions remarks drawing a reaction from Pyongyang on Friday, with Kim saying the U.S. strategy of applying pressure via sanctions was like quote "trying to put out a fire with oil".

Kim also doused Trump's hopes of another meeting saying the outcome of the Hanoi summit earlier this year - where talks ended suddenly without an agreement - had forced him to question his strategy of international engagement.

Saying the U.S. came to the table with quote "completely unrealisable plans" and that even a hundred or a thousand meetings would end in the same result, without a change in Washington's approach.

Kim adding that while his personal relationship with Trump remains positive Pyongyang had no interest in a repeat of Hanoi.

Saying he would be patient to the new year but that quote "it will be hard to get as good a chance as last time".
