ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION Hundreds of migrants crossed into Mexico's southern border city of Chiapas on Friday (April 12), seeking a visa to aid them on their path north towards the border with the U.S..

Families with young children walked alongside a highway in the town of Metapa de Dominguez towards Ciudad Hidalgo, to register themselves with immigration officials in the country.

But some migrants reported that efforts to secure a visa in Mexico have been frustrated by red tape.

Others are avoiding immigration completely, amidst rumours of deportations from Mexico.

Trump has repeatedly threatened to close down the U.S.-Mexico border if Mexican officials do not do more to thwart the migrants, potentially harming tens of billions of dollars in trade, but has also praised Mexican efforts following his outbursts.

The U.S. President has made stemming the flow of migrants across the southern border a centrepiece of his administration, likening the situation to a crisis and using that argument to justify his demand to build a wall along the frontier.
