TEASER: Homeland Security's Kirstjen Nielsen is leaving the administration U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen "will be leaving her position." That's according to a tweet from President Donald Trump on Sunday.

In a follow up tweet, Trump said Kevin McAleenan will become Acting Secretary.

CBS reported the news of Nielsen's departure earlier in the day, but said it was unclear if her exit would be voluntary.

The department Nielsen heads has recently come under intense scrutiny over its treatment of migrants…from a policy of separating children from their parents to the deaths of migrant children while in federal custody… (SOUNDBITE) (English) HOUSE HOMELAND SECURITY COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN BENNIE THOMPSON SAYING: "Just yes or no: are we still putting children in cages?" (SOUNDBITE) (English) DHS SECRETARY KIRSTJEN NIELSEN SAYING: "Sir, they're not cages...they're areas of the border facility that are carved out for the safety and protection for those who remain there while they're being processed." Just last weekend... migrants were seen kept inside a chain-link enclosure under a bridge in El Paso, Texas.

This, as Trump has reiterated threats to close the U.S.-Mexico border and pulled funding from Central American countries in order to curb what he describes as a crisis of undocumented immigration.
