Brunei began implementing a series of harsh Islamic laws on Wednesday (April 3), allowing death by stoning for adultery and homosexuality, alongside public flogging for abortion and amputation for theft.

The full implementation of Sharia law in the southeast Asian country comes amid a growing backlash from other states and celebrities.

The U.S. State Department released a statement condemning the move and the United Nations said it was a serious breach of international law.

Oscar-winning actor George Clooney has called for a boycott of luxury hotels owned by The Brunei Investment Company, including the Beverly Hills Hotel and The Dorchester in London.

Other big names, such as Elton John and Ellen DeGeneres, took to Twitter to endorse the campaign.

Former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden said, "There is no excuse - not culture, not tradition - for this kind of hate and inhumanity."
