Kamala Harris Wants Federal Investment to Raise Teacher Pay

Presidential hopeful Sen.

Kamala Harris called for  major increases  to teacher salaries nationwide on Saturday and proposed a plan that would allocate federal funds for that purpose.

The California Democrat made the announcement at a rally in Houston, telling supporters that if elected, she would raise teachers' pay nationwide by the end of her first term.

She specifically called out the pay gap in teachers' wages, saying "right now, teachers are making over 10 percent less than other college-educated graduates, and that gap is about $13,000 a year." After her announcement,  Harris said  on Twitter: "No teacher should have to work 2-3 jobs to survive.

That's wrong.

I'm ready to do something about it." According to Harris, her proposal would be the largest federal investment in teacher pay ever.

Her campaign said it will outline the plan's full details, including where the funding would come from, next week.
