White House Says ISIS Has Been Completely Defeated

Press secretary Sarah Sanders says acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan has informed President Trump of the group's defeat.

White House Says ISIS Has Been Completely Defeated

According to the White House, Syria is now completely free of the ISIS caliphate that has held ground in the country for years.

Press secretary Sarah Sanders relayed the news to reporters on Air Force One Friday.

She said acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan had briefed President Trump on the news.  Worth noting, though, is a  report from CNN  coming after the announcement.

CNN says its team on the ground in Syria still sees U.S.-backed forces fighting pockets of ISIS fighters.

They say this fighting is taking place in tunnels surrounding Baghouz, the last ISIS stronghold.   A spokesman for the U.S.-backed forces told CNN, "The [White House] statement doesn't contradict ours: we also believe that ISIS was defeated.

There are some groups that refuse to surrender." According to Sanders' announcement, the Pentagon is expected to provide additional information "soon." Additional reporting from  Newsy affiliate CNN .
