With a possible merger to create a new German banking giant under discussion .... Deutsche Bank boss Christian Sewing is thinking big ... Its annual report - released on Friday - reveals he's paid big too.

Seven million euros in 2018 - that's eight million dollars ... To make him one of the best paid CEOs in European banking ... It puts him ahead of peers at HSBC and Barclays.

Though behind Tidjane Thiam of Credit Suisse - he took home a total pay package of 12.7 million dollars.

The disclosures are politically sensitive.

Deutsche is still reeling from a recent history of large fines for misdeeds ... Last year, it was ensnared in a money laundering scandal.

If a merger with Commerzbank goes ahead it could, unions fear, lead to tens of thousands of job cuts.

The report also reveals its management board members got their first bonuses in four years.

From an overall bonus pool of 1.9 billion euros - 2.1 billion dollars.
