Record floods engulf U.S. Central states

Rains that melted a historic snowpack swamped U.S. Central Plains states with record floods on Sunday, breeching river levees and causing two deaths.

SOUNDBITE: DOREEN JANKOVICH, OMAHA RESIDENT, SAYING: "You live on an area called a 100 year flood plain, you don't expect to see a lot of water like that." From Nebraska to Wisconsin, record flooding has overwhelmed communities.

SOUNDBITE: MERLYN BEAMIS, RESIDENT, SAYING: "It's devastating, it's devastating... I was scared, I was petrified I didn't how fast it was coming up." The historic flooding has breeched levees and left two dead.

And with water levels expected to rise through the week, evacuations are underway in many towns along the Missouri, Elkhorn and Platte Rivers.

SOUNDBITE: TROY KENDALL, RESIDENT, SAYING: "Every piece of furniture in the cabin's under water you know so that's the worst it's ever been since we've been out here." The deadly flooding is the aftermath of a late-winter bomb cyclone storm that drenched the nation's midsection.

SOUNDBITE: DOREEN JANKOVICH, OMAHA RESIDENT, SAYING: "I was blown away by the utter devastation, the power of nature is incredible." SOUNDBITE: DAVID PERKINS, RESIDENT, SAYING: "It's been pretty amazing to watch the water rise here over the last couple of days." The extreme weather is blamed for two deaths, including one person who died at home after failing to evacuate and another swept away while trying to tow a trapped car with his tractor.

Flooding is expected to persist through the week.
