Arch-Brexiteer Farage leads 'betrayal' march

Nigel Farage, the politician who probably did more than anyone else to force Britain's referendum on membership of the European Union, on Saturday (March 16) joined protesters at the start of a 270-mile march over what they call a betrayal of the Brexit vote.

Lucy Fielder reports.

Arch-Brexiteer Farage leads 'betrayal' march

Arch-Eurosceptic Nigel Farage led the start of a so-called "Brexit Betrayal" march across England on Saturday (16 March).

He's the politician who probably did more than anyone else to push Britain to call a referendum on leaving the EU, back in June 2016.

Britons voted 52-48 to leave.

The 270-mile march crosses England from Sunderland in the north, To end up outside parliament in Westminster on March 29th -- the date Britain is supposed to quit.

Only this week, in a tumultuous series of votes, parliament voted to delay Brexit -- and to reject both the government's divorce deal, and the option of leaving without a deal.

Now Brexiteers fear what they see as an out-of-touch elite will scuttle their Leave vote.

(SOUNDBITE)(English) MEP AND FORMER UKIP LEADER, NIGEL FARAGE, SAYING: "...we're here today in the very week when parliament has done its upmost to betray not just the referendum result, but the general election result and their own vote when they voted for 'Article 50'.The law of the land says we're leaving in 13 days with or without a deal, and we're here to say if you think you're going to walk all over us, we're going to march straight back to you." As leader of UKIP - the UK Independence Party -- Farage pressured former Prime Minister David Cameron to call the Brexit vote to leave the European Union.

But he quit in the days after the referendum.

Only to show up on Donald Trump's presidential campaign trail later that year.

He is still a politician in the European parliament -- for now.
