It caused a social media melt down, but Facebook says it is now 100% back up and running after a roughly day-long outage that made it difficult for users to access its apps and services.

Partial shutdowns hit Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook for several hours across the globe on Wednesday (March 13) and into Thursday (March 14).

It was one of the longest crashes faced by the parent company Facebook Inc.

In the recent past.

And although Insta proudly announced on Wednesday night their platform had recovered, Facebook was out for the count for many hours to come.

The company is attributing the failure to what a spokesperson called a server configuration issue, without giving any details, and are investigating the overall impact of outages.

That includes whether advertisers could be eligible for refunds.

DownDetector's live outage map showed people in the U.S., Japan, and parts of Europe were affected by the social media blackout.

The FacebookDown and InstagramDown hashtags were trending on one of the only unaffected platforms: Twitter.
