Tesla sedans holed up at a port in China finally got the green light.

A Chinese official said the customs authority has lifted its suspension of its Model 3 cars.

Customs had stopped clearing Model 3s last week, saying the cars lacked the required warning signs in Chinese and had incorrect or missing nameplate labels.

Sources say the automaker had made the necessary changes to resolve any issues.

However, Tesla declined to comment.

Making inroads in China is key for Tesla.

China is the world's largest market for electric vehicles.

Tesla's sales there had been hit hard by the U.S.-China trade war.

And it needs growth there to help offset softening demand in the U.S. So far Tesla has been importing all the cars it sells in China, and substantial customs duties put it at a disadvantage in competing against local electric vehicle makers like Nio and Byton.

But Tesla plans to start making Model 3s by the end of this year at a plant it's building in Shanghai.
