Athletes raced up Paris' iconic Eiffel Tower on Wednesday, battling lashing rain to see who could climb its 1,665 steps the fastest.

ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION Piotr Lobodzinski and Suzy Walsham battled high winds and lashing rain to retain their titles in the Eiffel Tower vertical race on Wednesday (March 14).

The race is in the form of a time trial with departures every 30 seconds.

It saw 130 athletes eschew the elevators to race up the 1,665 steps of the tower, the most visited paid-for monument in the world.

Pole Piotr Lobodzinski won the race for the fifth consecutive year with a time of 7:53.97.
