He's been dropping hints about a 2020 White House run for quite some time… But then came this on Tuesday as former Vice President Joe Biden spoke to firefighters in Boston: Crowd chanting: "Run, Joe, run!

Run, Joe, run!" (SOUNDBITE) (English) FORMER U.S. VICE PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN SAYING: "I appreciate the energy you showed when I got up here.

Save it a little longer - I may need it in a few weeks." Those comments adding to speculation Biden will soon add his name to the already crowded Democratic field…and if he does…he'll enter the race at the very top of the pac, A new poll out this week in Iowa, an early primary state, puts Biden in the lead among declared or potential candidates at 27 percent..

Just ahead of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.

Analysts say Biden jumping into the fray would test whether Democratic voters are more interested in a party centrist like Biden or one of the many other contenders, including Sanders, who think they can fire up the progressive base.

The 76 year old former senator from Delaware, who was President Obama's righthand man for eight years - has long touted himself as someone who can connect with disaffected, working- class voters, many of whom voted for Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton in 2016… …and he hasn't shied away from taking on President Trump… (SOUNDBITE) (English) FORMER U.S. VICE PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN SAYING: "I am sick and tired of this administration." But skeptics say Biden's lead in Iowa is largely a function of name recognition…and could be threatened…as the public gets to know the diverse crop of newcomers, such as Kamala Harris and Cory Booker …and his record comes under scrutiny by liberal activists.

Biden thought about running in 2016, but ultimately declined, as he mourned the death of his son Beau to cancer.

But now he appears to be back in fighting form…signaling that he may be ready to kick off his third bid for the White House.
