Academy award winner Pedro Almodovar presented his new film "Pain and Glory" in Madrid on Tuesday (March 12) ahead of its opening on March 22, bringing together Spanish stars Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas.

The Spanish director returns to the big screen after a three-year absence with a new autobiographical film that closes a trilogy which includes "Law of Desire" (1987) and "Bad Education" (2004).

"Pain and Glory" tells the story of the different stages of a movie director's life, including his childhood, the relationship with his mother, his romances, and the emotional emptiness generated by not knowing whether he will be able to keep directing films. In "Pain and Glory", Banderas, 58, plays the director and Cruz, 44, Almodovar's mother in her younger years.

"Pain and Glory" will premiere on March 13 in Madrid.
