A Brussels court sentenced French citizen Mehdi Nemmouche to life in prison on Monday (March 11), for shooting four people dead in the city's Jewish Museum in 2014.

This CCTV footage shows the moments surrounding the attack, where the gunman enters holding a rifle.

Two Israeli tourists and two museum employees were killed in the attack.

Nemmouche's defense lawyer said the footage was doctored and his client had been framed by Israel's Mossad spy service; claims that outraged survivors and victims' families.

The trial highlighted the threats posed by European jihadists returning home.

Nemmouche staged the attack after returning from Syria, where he fought with Islamist militant factions.

Nemmouche is also facing charges in France over his role in holding journalists hostage in Syria.

Two of the French journalists testified during the trial, saying their captor was deeply anti-Semitic, sadistic and full of hatred.

Nemmouche was largely silent during the two-month trial; his final words to the jury: "Life goes on."
