U.N. moments of silence for Ethiopia crash victims

Moments of silence were held inside the United Nations headquarters in New York on Monday to honor the 157 people killed when an Ethiopian Airlines plane crashed.

ROUGH CUT (No reporter narration) STORY: Moments of silence were held inside the United Nations headquarters in New York on Monday (March 11) to honor the 157 people killed when an Ethiopian Airlines plane crashed.

The Ethiopian Airlines 737 Max 8 plunged into farmland minutes after take-off from Addis Ababa for Nairobi on Sunday.

The victims came from more than 30 nations and included 21 United Nations' staff.

"A global tragedy has hit close to home and the United Nations is united in grief," said U.N.

Chief Antonio Guterres.

"Let us honor the memories of our colleagues by keeping their spirit of service alive," he added.

The United Nations flag was lowered to half staff outside the U.N.
