STORY: New Los Angeles Galaxy captain Zlatan Ibrahimovic declared himself ready for the team's MLS season opener this weekend at which former Galaxy star David Beckham will be honored with a statue.

Speaking to reporters Thursday (February 28) in California, the 37-year-old Swede said he had no health issues and was looking forward to playing in official matches after a lot of training during the long MLS offseason.

Ibrahimovic and the Galaxy will open their 2019 campaign at home against the Chicago Fire where Beckham will become the first MLS player to be honored with a statue that will be unveiled prior to the match.

In 2007, the English midfielder became the first big European name to join the MLS, where he won back-to-back championships in 2011 and 2012 during his six years and 98 appearances with the Galaxy.

Beckham's MLS stint helped give the American league credibility and paved the way for other top European players like Ibrahimovic to make the leap in subsequent years.
