Republican Harris will not run in new N.C. election

North Carolina Republican Mark Harris said on Tuesday that he will not run in a do-over election for one of the state's House seats, after the first race was marred by fraud... His announcement comes just days after the North Carolina Board of Election voted to hold a NEW election and invalidated the results of the Nov.

6th race, in which Harris had claimed victory..

Harris, a former pastor who led his opponent Democrat Dan McCready by 900 votes, had sought for months to fend off an election rerun… But during the investigation by the bipartisan elections board, evidence showed that an operative for Harris' campaign had orchestrated a ballot fraud scheme in the 9th congressional district… Harris son John said he warned his father that one of his political operatives Leslie McCrae Dowless was illegally collecting and turning in ballots from voters..

(SOUNDBITE) JOHN HARRIS, SON OF MARK HARRIS, SAYING: "I told him on the phone call I thought they were illegally collecting ballots…" (SOUNDBITE) UNNAMED BOARD MEMBER SAYING: "It was painfully clear to me that your son was saying, daddy don't mess with this guy." (SOUNDBITE) MARK HARRIS SAYING: "I'm his dad.

I know he's a little judgmental and has a little taste of arrogance.

// In all truthfulness today, he was right." Dowless has maintained his innocence and Harris campaign officials said they did not pay Dowless to do anything illegal..

On the last day of the hearing, Harris called for a new election..

But on Tuesday in an email, Harris, who is recovering from an infection last month that led to sepsis and two strokes, said residents deserved a candidate at "full strength during the new campaign." The date for the new election has not yet been set.

McCready plans to run again and the North Carolina Republican Party said they will soon emerge with a "competitive" nominee to replace Harris.
