Trump signals progress in China trade talks

President Donald Trump on Thursday radiated optimism about the current trade talks with China.

This after a string of upbeat morning tweets in which Trump said negotiations with China's Vice Premier Liu He in Washington "are going well with good intent and spirit on both sides." But Trump said no deal would be final until he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, "in the near future." On Thursday the Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed sources, reported Chinese trade negotiators were proposing a meeting between Trump and XI next month in China.

The two nations have been in a tit for tat tariff battle since last year, shaking world markets and disrupting the flow of billions of dollars worth of goods between the world's two largest economies.

Washington says China steals U.S. technology secrets from U.S. companies doing business there, a claim Beijing denies.

The two leaders agreed to a 90-day trade ceasefire at the G20 meetings in December.

On Thursday, Trump said he hoped many of their differences would be resolved ahead of a March 1st deadline, when U.S. tariffs are set to jump to 25 percent on Chinese goods if no deal is reached.

Trump said any deal must include China opening its markets to U.S. financial services, manufacturing, agriculture and other industries.

The talks are due to run through Thursday with the Chinese delegation meeting Trump in the Oval Office.
