Invasion Day Rally Shuts Down Melbourne City Streets

‘Invasion Day’ marchers hit Melbourne streets on Australia Day, January 26, as part of a series of co-ordinated protests around the country. There were reports of city streets shut down as a result of the large-scale Invasion Day march.Australia Day marks the date in 1788 when Captain Arthur Phillip raised the flag of Great Britain in Port Jackson, NSW, and proclaimed a colonial outpost of the British Empire. But some Australians consider January 26 the date of an invasion by British settlers and argue the national day should be moved.
