Trump’s Government Shutdown Benches Scientists For The ‘Super Bowl of Astronomy’

The government shutdown is going to keep hundreds of scientists from attending what has been called the “Super Bowl of Astronomy.”????Almost 3,200 scientists were set to attend the 233rd meeting of the American Astronomical Society.

????But because of the government shutdown, the AAS estimated that 300 to 450 of those supposed to be there won’t be able to attend.

????The shutdown placed over 380,000 “nonessential” federal workers on furlough or unpaid leave.

????And that includes about 95% of NASA’s employees, many of who, planned to attend the conference.

????Topics like the early findings of NASA’s new planet hunter TESS and other topics like new black hole observations among many others were supposed to be discussed.

????The AAS said that it would allow co-authors to present even though the rules have always required that lead authors give the presentations.
