Trump to Meet With Lawmakers About Border Security

Congressional leaders are expected to sit down with President Donald Trump at the White House Wednesday afternoon to discuss border security.  It'll  be the first time  that the president's met with both Democratic and Republican leaders since the government partially shut down on Dec.

And Wednesday's meeting could give all sides a chance to restart negotiations to reopen the government.  The  big sticking point  between lawmakers and the president has been border wall funding.

House Democrats  unveiled a plan  earlier this week to end the ongoing government shutdown — but it doesn't include the $5 billion President Trump's requested for a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.  Democrats are expected to vote on that spending package after they assume control of the lower chamber Thursday.

But the Senate — which is controlled by Republicans — has said in the past that it won't rubber stamp anything President Trump doesn't approve of.  It's unknown exactly what's on the agenda for Wednesday's White House briefing — but who's invited is more clear.  Multiple outlets report  House Speaker designate Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer are among those representing Democrats.

And some of the Republican officials who've been invited include Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and incoming House Minority Whip Steve Scalise.
