Making her first tentative, wobbly steps into the fresh air, the latest addition to Berlin Zoo's black rhino family was greeted by a crowd of enraptured visitors on Friday (October 12).

On a sunny October morning, they gathered around the enclosure to watch 16-year-old mother Maburi usher her three-week-old baby girl outside.

The baby now weighs around 25 kilograms, and does not have any horns yet - the two that it will eventually have only grow after birth.

When it is fully grown at around age five, it could weigh up to 1.3 tons.

The infant will suckle for around two years before moving on to a diet of foliage, branches and vegetables.

The public are now invited to suggest names for the newcomer, either directly to the zoo or via the social media channels of the Berliner Sparkasse bank.

The baby is the 20th black rhino to be born at Berlin Zoo.

The World Wildlife Fund says the species is still considered "critically endangered" despite conservation efforts that have seen numbers double from twenty years ago.
