Right now at five, students received these alertssaturday saying shots what fired near what students say happened during the moments after... plus, one person was airlifted after a wreck in lowndes county... what led to this outcome... those stories and more coming up on this weekend edition of wtva 9news at five... thanks for being with us... good evening, i'm madison heil.

As we go through the evening and overnight hours we will see nice mostly clear skies and muggy conditions across the area.

We will see overnight low temperatures drop off only into the upper 60s to middle 70s.

Tonight one man is recovering from a gunshot, another is behind bars... it happened saturday at the pine grove apartments in ackerman... ronald coffey was shot in the leg and air lifted to north mississippi medical center... this man,,,michael hunt of louisville sits in jail ...he is charged with aggravated assault... we are following up on a breaking news story from saturday night.... shots fired near the ole miss campus ... this all happening while thousands were in town for the alabama game... just minutes away from vaught hemingway stadium... wtva's gracyn ashmore joins us now with more... yes, oxford and university police responded to a supposed shooting off of hathorn road last night during the ole miss alabama game.

Ole miss students were sent a reb alert around 8 oclock advising them to avoid the hathorn road area right off of chucky mullens drive... ole miss student lauren grant left the football game early but was not able leave because of u-p-d searching the area where she had parked at the end of fraternity row... "there's a police officerwalkingthe surrounding woods area and everything and he tells us that we are not allowed to get near our cars and where our car is close to the woods where the suspect seems to be hiding and there are dogs out and everything."

Grant was able to get to her car after a few minutes and another reb alert was sent out about thirty minutes later stating authortites had cleared the area of any danger... although some locals remain concerned by the nights events... ou know oxford is such a safe place and ole miss is such a safe place.

I think we consistently have some of the lowest crimes rates in the country; i know for certain in the sec.

And i know that is the reason a lot of people come here is because they do feel so safe, which is especially shocking for something like this to of happened, especially during a football game."

The investigation is still ongoing,,,,and the university has notified the community to call the oxford police department if they have any additional information on the case... one person was airlifted after a wreck in lowndes county... it happened on new hope road around noon..

A car hit a tree... and was smoking ... that fire was put out... we are working to learn the condition of the driver.... an ole miss student has severe injuries after being run over and left at the scene..

Now police are trying to find the driver involved... the university of mississippi police department says it happened aroundtwosaturday morning... near the intersection of northgate drive and sorority row....you see it circled in red ... anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the number on your screen... i did speak with the communications director at the school,,,, hesaysat this time they are not able to release the students condition... we are working to learn more about another hit and run...this one in starkville..

Our news partner the starkville daily news reportsit happenedat the intersection of highway 12 and louisville street... this accident happened around 10friday night... this is a photo from the scene.... you can see the accident involves a motorcycle... the news paper reports the victim is in stable condition.... however, we are waiting to hear back from starkville police... now let's go back to meteorologist john dolusic in the weather center for a quick look aty what's ahead... john?

Crews from 4-county electric are doing their part to assist hurricane florence victims... two crews leftsaturday for south carolina..

These14 volunteersare insumter south carolina... theyare assistingabout 31,000 members with black river electric... in addition to the crews,,,, several large pieces of equipment are there as well to assist in the recovery process.... local government officials from several cities in mississippi will be spending tuesday at the white house... tupelo mayor jason shelton says the invitations were sent to leaders of the 25 largest cities in the state.

He says they will meet with cabinet members,,, white house staff and congressional leaders to talk about issued important to mississippi... a group from texas has also been invited to attend as well.

After inspiring starkville and the softball community with her courageous battle with ovarian cancer... today the university honoredalex wilcox with an on campus memorial service... the ceremony featured video tributes ...as well as m-s-u softball players speaking on the impact wilcox had on their team and them personally.

Mississippi state softball honored alex wilcox by retiring her jersey at the half time show of their football game against louisiana last night.

The natchez trace parkway celebrates the 50th anniversary,, of national trails system act with a special nature hike later this month... parkway invites visitors on a hike along the blackland prairie section,,, of the natchez trace national scenic trail on saturday september 29 at 10:00 a-m... the blackland prairie trail is located across from the visitor center at tupelo... the guided walk will last about two miles.... both kids and parents are welcome... still quite a bit more ahead on this weekend edition of wtva 9 news at five... the death tole continues to rise in the carolinas..

A mississippi prisonis installing more razor wire as well as implementing a new emergency notification system.....this comes weeks after a convicted murderer escaped.

The corrections commissioner in leakesvile says about 26,000 feet of additional razor wire has been installed around the top of buildings where inmates are housed.

When emergencies happen at the prison the razor wire alert system... will notify greene county by landline or wireless phones.

Officials in north carolina are urging out of state travelers to avoid driving through the state entirely.... you're looking at a drone shot of some of the devastating flooding in new bern... florence dumped more than two feet of rain in some places... causing major flooding,,, downed trees ,,and impassable roads.

... the storm has left about 700- thousand people without power and caused about 171 roads to be shut down.

... officials say at least15 people have died in the carolinas due to the storm... a u-s border patrol agent in texas has confessed to killing four people.

Authorities are callingthis man 35-year-old juan ortiz a serial killer.... they said all of his victims worked as prostitutes... ortiz was arrested saturday on four murder charges after a woman escaped from him and alerted police.... the murders happened between september 3rd and september 15th.... it's unclear if there could be more victims. ortiz worked as a u-s border patrol agent for 10 years... and is also a u-s navy veteran.... still ahead, more to show you on wtva 9 news at five.... thousands of acres have burned in utah... the latest on the largest wildfire on record... two different fires burning in utah have charred around 80-thousand acres.

The largest fire - known as the pole creek fire has burned more than 62-thousand acres.

Officials say this fire has also turned the air unhealthy in some areas.

Saturday authorities closed a highway because of the flames.

More than five-thousand people have been evacuated as a result of the flames.

Crews are battling the fire from the air and the sky.

Pointing travelers to cincinnati... has a lot of drivers doing a double take... cincinnati is misspelled... with an extra "i" between the first "n" and second "c."
