Good evening, i'm shante sumpter... shots were fired near the ole miss campus... this happening as fans are in the area for the alabama game... it happened about four minutes from vaught- hemingway stadium... students were told to avoid this areanear hathron road... that's where we find wtva's evan hensley with the latest information shots were reported by a university alert system a little before 8 tonight police are now saying that the area around c m tad smith collesium is safe.

I walked all the way down hawthorne road but i did not see any crime scene but i did see this notice warning patrons of shots beingn fired in an off campus area off of hawthorn rd the area that appeared to be under notice was around the colesium we'll have more on those stories in just a minute... first, though, let's head over to john dolusic in the weather center for a quick check on what's happening right now... john?

An ole miss student has severe injuries after being run over and left at the scene..

Now police are trying to find the driver involved... the university of mississippi police department says it happened aroundtwo this morning... near the intersection of northgate drive and sorority row....you see it circled in red ... anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the number on your screen... i did speak with the communications director at the school,,,, hesaysat this time they are not able to release the students condition... we are working to learn more about another hit and run...this one in starkville..

Our news partner the starkville daily news reportsit happenedat the intersection of highway 12 and louisville street... this accident happened around 10 last night... this is a photo from the scene.... you can see the accident involves a motorcycle... the news paper reports the victim is in stable condition.... however, we are waiting to hear back from starkville police... also in starkville, two people are now behind bars accused ofmultiple burglaries across the area... these men,,,matthew williams and edward shields were both charged with 7 counts of burglary and 3 counts of auto burglary.

The burglaries took place over a 5 month period.... their bonds were set at 50 thousand dollars each.,,, happening now..the big showdown in oxford just ended.....the crimson tide win bigover the ole miss rebels..

Thousands of fans gathered in the grove to tailgate, eat good food an celebrate with friends and family.

I spoke with one fan who was checking out the ole miss gameday atmosphere for the first time.

Bryant morgan - tupelo "this is my first time in the grove, just wanted to see what it was like.

Got a good feel for the town, for oxford.

Especially to come here for a big sec game, its cool."

A lot of fans agreed that oxfords gameday experience is one of a kind tommy abney - tupelo "man there is nothing like the grove, it's the best college game-day experience in the land.

We may not win every game but we wont lose a party."

Even though the crimson tide is favored by double-digits, fans say that the rebels will still hang in there.

Andy tyer - franklin, tn "i think we are going to hang in really, really well in the first half.

But then i think their depth will sort of take over."

The devastation of hurricane florence is widespread,,, and towns close to home are making strives to help out to those in need.... wtva's gracyn ashmore explains... "eight days of hope was here at the global outreach center right outside tupelo, and the citizens of the pontotoc and tupelo area could come out and donate supplies to the victims of hurrican florence.

Now this organization willactually begoing to the locations of hurricane florence and the carolinas later in the week, but for now they are gathering funds and supplies and waiting out the storm so that they are able to go."the eight days of hope organization is known for serving citizens in need after natural disasters.

Assistant chandler gurley explains the plan for heading to the devastation from hurricane florence "we're really just waiting.

We are waiting for the waters to recede.

We are trying to get in contact with other churches and organizations that are alreadythereto see what we can do to help, so hopefully by the middle of this week we will haveall ofthe details of where we are going and what we are doing, and how we can go serve those in need."

Even if you did not make it out to the collection site earlier in the day, there is still a chance to contribute to the rapid response team.

Donations can be made online at their website eight days of hope dot com... "it is a big task, but we know god's got it and we're just his hands and feet, so we're ready to go."

Gracyn ashmore wtva 9 news... crews from 4-county electric are assisting hurricane florence victims as well... two crews left this morning for south carolina..

These14 volunteersare heading tosumter south carolina... they will be assistingabout 31,000 members with black river electric... in addition to the crews,,,, 4- county is sending several large pieces of equipment to assist in the recovery process.... tupelo city leaders will take a look at a building code in hopes of improving fire protection in the city.... planning director shane hooper is asking the city council to adopt the international building code... the code looks to improve fire prevention through design and construction of homes and buildings... it also sets regulations on access for those with disabilities and the stability of the structures built... hooper told council members this week adopting the code could also improve the city's fire rating,, and lower insurance costs for residents... the council is expected to review the proposal tuesday night... the natchez trace parkway celebrates the 50th anniversary,, of national trails system act with a special nature hike later this month... parkway invites visitors on a hike along the blackland prairie section,,, of the natchez trace national scenic trail on saturday september 29 at 10:00 a-m... the blackland prairie trail is located across from the visitor center at tupelo... the guided walk will last about two miles.... both kids and parents are welcome... still ahead on wtva 9 news on wlov... flooding is a big problem in north carolina... as tropical storm florence continues to pound the area... the latest warning from officials coming up... as we go through the evening and overnight hours we will see nice mostly clear skies and muggy conditions across the area.

A couple of weak cold fronts will approach our area later in the upcoming work week.

This will give us a slightly better chance for some showers and thunderstorms. we may also see our high temperatures drop by a few degrees as we go into that time period.

A harrison county father is behind bars,,,, accused of severely beating his two-month- old... investigators say the child was having difficulty breathingthursday when first responders arrived... the baby was immediately rushed to the hospital,,, where doctors discovered the child had a severe head trauma.... 21 year old buddy cox admitted to hitting the child several times out of anger because the child would not stop crying... cox was arrested and is charged with one felony count of child abuse..

A bond is set at 100-thousand dolllars... police arrested a man in meridian for allegedly shooting his girlfriend last month.

Santonio houston is charged with aggravated assault-domestic violence following a shooting incident that happened on tuesday.

Houston's girlfriend was grazed by a bullet in her leg.

Houston also suffered a gunshot wound.

Police say the investigation into how that happened is still ongoing.

Mississippi's public safety commissionersays that state police will no longer buy nike products,,,, saying the athletic apparel maker is unpatriotic and fails to support those in uniform... now this comes after nike decided last week to use former 49ers quarterback colin kaepernick in an ad campaign.


Department spokesman warren strain said the department has bought shoes,shirts,and tactical training uniforms...from the company..

Officials in north carolina are urging out of state travelers to avoid driving through the state entirely as conditions rapidly worsen.

... more than 400 people have been rescuedsince thursday night from the floodwaters... you're looking at a drone shot of some of the devastating flooding in new bern... florence dumped more than two feet of rain in some places... and more is expected due to the storm's slow movement at just two miles-per-hour... officials say at least11 people have died in the carolinas due to the storm... officials say a man has died after being attacked by a shark off the cape cod coast today officials say the attack occurred while the 26-year-old man was boogie boarding around noon.... officials say life-saving measures were attempted on the beach,,, before the man was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead... the beach has since been closed to swimming... the incident is the first time a person has died from a shark attack in the state in more than 80 years... still more ahead on wtva 9 news on wlov... ajersey retirement for a very special mississippi player..

After inspiring starkville and the softball community with after inspiring starkville and the softball community with her courageous battle with ovarian cancer... mississippi state softball honored alex wilcox by retiring her jersey at the half time show of their football game against louisiana tonight... wilcox is the first female student athlete in mississippi state history to have her jersey retired... tomorrow the university will honoralex with an on campus memorial service... it will begin at 10 in the morning inside the chapel of memories... the ceremony will feature video tributes ...as well as m-s-u softball players speaking on the impact wilcox had on them... itis open to the public... it wasn't too long ago that ole miss was a thorn in nick saban's side.

For nearly two decades, tupelo has hosted volleyfest, a round robin volleyball tournament.

This year's volleyfest featured 9 teams.... alcorn central taking on germantown, mississippi in pool play.

First set, this was a great point here.
