(ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION) San Juan mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz criticized on Wednesday (September 12) recent comments made by U.S. President Donald Trump where he characterized his administration's response to Puerto Rico's Hurricane Maria disaster as an "unsung success." Cruz told Reuters that Trump "does not get it" and that "unfortunately people died because of that." Trump has faced criticism for his administration's response to Hurricane Maria in 2017, which killed an estimated 3,000 people in the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico and knocked out power to all 3.4 million residents of the Caribbean island.

Puerto Rico is not expected to take a direct hit from Tropical Storm Isaac, which is approaching the Leeward Islands this week.

However, Cruz said that the territory is in a "weakened" state and not fully prepared.

She added however, that Puerto Ricans are prepared to divert resources if they are needed in North and South Carolina due to oncoming Hurricane Florence.

The center of Hurricane Florence, a slow-moving category 2 strength storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale, is expected to strike North Carolina late Thursday or early Friday and could drift southwest along the coast before turning inland, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
