U.S. cardinal removed amid sex abuse allegations

The former Archbishop of Washington, 87-year-old Cardinal Theodore McCarrick has become the latest high-ranking member of the Catholic church to have been brought down by sexual abuse allegations.

McCarrick's suspension was announced Wednesday after an investigation of decades-old allegations against him.

U.S. cardinal removed amid sex abuse allegations

American Cardinal Theodore McCarrick has been removed from public ministry over decades-old sexual abuse allegations.

The Archdiocese of New York made the announcement Wednesday, saying it found the allegations "credible and substantiated." The incident allegedly took place almost 45 years ago in New York where McCarrick was a priest.

The alleged victim came forward through a victim's advocate program created two years ago by the Archdiocese of New York.

The 87-year-old McCarrick retired as Archbishop of Washington,DC in 2006.

He said in a statement that he's shocked by the allegations, has no recollection of the reported abuse and maintains his innocence.
